A Case for Coaching
My Approach: Anchored in Aloha, Guided by Science
My team and I believe that true, lasting change is best achieved when it's rooted in a sense of place and guided by purpose. For me, this journey began almost 20 years ago as a PhD student, when I fell in love with the model of coaching and its roots in Health Psychology. Our mission is to bring that same spirit of balance and resilience to every client.
We know that true wellness requires more than just advice. To explain our unique approach, it's important to distinguish between three core disciplines: coaching, counseling, and consulting.
My Framework: Consulting, Counseling, and Coaching
My model for empowering individuals, teams, and organizations is built on the belief that coaching is the most effective path to achieving sustainable wellness. Here is how I distinguish my work, framed by the spirit of the islands.
Consulting
This is a diagnostic, expert-driven model. A consultant is like an expert geographer who delivers a comprehensive map of your journey. They analyze all the data the company’s operations, a team’s metrics, your personal history and provide a scientifically-based solution and a detailed route for you to follow.
Counseling
This is a healing, therapeutic model. A counselor is like a historian of the land, helping you understand the history of your past journey and how it has shaped you. The focus is on healing from past challenges and achieving emotional stability, ensuring you are well enough to begin a new journey.
Coaching
This is an empowering, future-focused model. A coach is a trusted local guide who equips you with the tools and knowledge to navigate the landscape yourself. We don't hand you a map; we help you read the stars, understand the tides, and discover your own path forward. The outcome is the sustainable wellness and resilience you, the client, own.
"Heart: Flatline to Finish Line"
is a documentary that follows the emotional journey of six cardiac patients who overcome heart disease to compete in the grueling IRONMAN triathlon. The film highlights the challenges faced by these individuals, including heart surgery and personal triumphs. It features original music by Cloud Cult and interviews with endurance sport and cardiology experts, aiming to inspire viewers with stories of perseverance and resilience. You can watch it on platforms like Fandango at Home and Amazon Video.
My 15 minutes of fame
Maybe more like 10 – includes receiving the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition, Community Leadership Award, and having my coaching work highlighted – while very pregnant - in the American Film Award-winning documentary, (2016) Heart: Flatline to Finish Line.
